Colour Blind
(Pure Noise Records)

Seaway have come a long way since Hoser, their previous full length. In the two years since, the band has worked out the kinks in their sound, and fully embraced the pop punk formula that can be heard here on Colour Blind. Vocalist Ryan Locke has improved his writing and singing greatly, punching out memorable lines like “But everything is cool, man” (“Slam”), “When you trace over my tattoos with your finger / We got drunk, I got stupid / Goddamn, you’re tearing me apart” (“Best Mistake”), “Nobody likes slipping out the back door / But this is stubborn / Yeah, this is stubborn love” (“Stubborn Love”), and “Sometimes I can be a fucking airhead / So tie me to your fingertips” (“Airhead”) to name just a few of the strongest moments. But really, Colour Blind is full of them. And it’s not the kind of album that is straight-up, one speed. Seaway have done a good job balancing this one out, without even tossing in anything acoustic or necessarily slow (as many others have done). What it comes down to is an energetic and bouncing record that has its highs and lows, hitting various moods while keeping upbeat and positive in sound. And as such, the entire band has really come together and tightened their efforts. Everyone has returned better than before, and it’s an obvious difference. Colour Blind is engaging, easy to get into, move about, and powerfully memorable. It even has its rougher sounds to kick that smoothness out of the pop punk that can be overwhelming at times. This one is definitely recommended. (Nathaniel Lay)
